Edmonton is becoming much more “cultured” when it comes to the variety and types of shops we have available to us. This is especially true when you’re talking about specialty and gourmet foods. Shawn and I love to cook (although we’ve been a little lazy lately with my lack of appetite) and we’re always on the hunt for great places to get the best ingredients.
One of Shawn’s summer specialties are his BBQ grilled veggies in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We used to buy the best oil and vinegar that we could from the grocery store, and it always served us well. That is, until, Evoolution opened it’s doors.
The whole concept of the place is great. You go in, get a rundown of what’s where (the service is stellar!) and are free to try anything that you like before you buy it, in any combination that you want. They have little jars of bread for dipping and pairing suggestions with every oil and vinegar they sell. The best part, though, is that they bottle your purchase for you on the spot. You choose from three standard size bottles ($12/$18/$29 respectively) and they fill it, cork it and package it right in front of you.
Our favourite flavours? The Mission Fig Dark Balsamic Vinegar, Cinnamon Pear Dark Balsamic Vinegar and Tuscan Herb Olive Oil. The Tuscan Herb and Mission Fig are perfect for the grilled veggies, and we also make a bangin’ bruschetta with the two. These are the three things that we always have on hand, no matter the time of year, but I also like the Garlic Olive Oil, Red Apple Dark Balsamic and Dark Chocolate Dark Balsamic. If you live in the Edmonton area and are looking to add some fresh flavours to your cooking, this is the place to go.
And, not only do they have oils and vinegars, they also sell a huge variety of salts, spices and dried pastas. We never use any other steak spice anymore, and the Black Truffle infused Sea Salt is heavenly. We also keep a bottle of the vanilla sugar on hand for baking and morning pancakes. The pasta is delicious and never comes out soggy or starchy.
Located on the 4th Street Promenade in downtown Edmonton, this is one store that should be on your list if you happen to be in the area. If you’re not in the area, make a special trip. Trust me, it’s worth it.
